NAMIC Congressional Contact Program

On June 6-7, 2017, 19 representatives from 4 TAMIC farm mutuals, participated in the Congressional Contact Program in Washington, D.C. hosted by the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies.  TAMIC member participants met with almost 20 different Congressional offices while on Capitol Hill. Among these will be Republican Jeb Hensarling, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, which holds jurisdiction over issues pertaining to insurance. Hensarling’s support will be key as the debates over insurance regulation and the NFIP continue to unfold. The group also met with the offices of several other committee chairmen, including Kevin Brady, chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee and the Joint Taxation Committee; Michael McCaul of the House Homeland Security Committee; Mac Thornberry of the House Armed Services Committee; Lamar Smith of the House Science, Space & Technology Committee; and Pete Sessions of the House Rules Committee. Aside from these important offices on the House side, TAMIC member participants also met with the office of the Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn. TAMIC hosted a reception featuring Blue Bell Ice Cream and was attended by over 400 Congressional Members and Staff.

These TAMIC members met with their federal legislators to discuss the issues of utmost importance to the property/casualty insurance industry including insurance regulatory reform, natural disaster mitigation, reforming and reauthorizing the National Flood Insurance Program, and restoring private airspace for unmanned aerial systems. As these important legislative debates continue to unfold over the course of the year there has never been a better time to meet with key lawmakers. This was a perfect opportunity to influence Congress on legislation that directly impacts the Texas insurance marketplace.
